Summer Experience 2008
Education and Social Mobilization Coordinator
Immigrant Culture and Art Association (ICAA) is looking for two motivated students to fill the Summer student position and serve as the Social mobilization of youth in ICAA Summer Experience project.
The Summer Experience project (SEP) is an ICAA initiative to involve and direct youth between the age of 12-19 in their new career choices, summer artistic and cultural activities including sport and recreational activities as well as education through involvement in artistic and cultural programming.
This project is aimed to fill the gap between the school programs and the needs of the immigrant, visible minority and financially underrepresented community members.
Specific Duties
- Coordinate the organizational stage of the summer experience group made of diverse community youth.
- Create in coordination with ICAA Executive Director the work schedule of the SEP.
- Secure access to pools, bus passes and arrange recreational activities.
- Schedule talks and modeling classes with youth.
- Future career orientation for youth. PowerPoint presentation on graphic design based careers.
- Assist in the development and provision youth development in the area of antiracism and equity
- Recruit students for the program and promote the initiative
- Assist in the development of the knowledge and skills needed to identify and eliminate barriers to equitable access to services
- Support the development of inclusive, antiracist educational programming for art school students;
- Identify and develop programs, including:
cultural discussions, facilitation, leadership development, anti-racism dialogue, and focus groups.
Enable group members’ participation in activities such as:
- drawing, Painting, Framing, pottery
- Computer Graphics and web design
- Organize the final event of the SEP in September.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary school student in art, graphic, web design, or social science student.
- Knowledge of anti-racism organizational practices and experience in developing and providing antiracism training programs;
- Familiarity with the refugees and newcomers environment;
- Familiarity with volunteerism;
- Facilitation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent community and youth relations background
Duration of Job: 7 weeks,
Start Date: July 5, 2008
Age: from 15 to 24 years of age (up to 29 for persons with a disability within the meaning of the Ontario Human Rights Code).
